Our preventative care approach

Man during Professional teeth cleaning

Get to know the value and effectiveness of the “60-minute prophy”

At No Fear Dentistry our teams are big proponents of what we call the “60-minute prophy.” The term “prophy” stands for prophylaxis, which is just the medical way of referring to professional teeth cleaning. Cleanings are fundamental to preventive dental care. We like to schedule at least one hour for each appointment, and these visits should take place at least two times per year – even for those patients who are otherwise healthy and have no known risk factors for oral disease.

Our teams feel you should never rush something as important as protecting your smile’s beauty, health, and function. You should get the attention and unhurried, comfortable, relaxed care you deserve. In addition to professional cleanings gently yet skillfully performed by our dental hygienists, patients should generally expect:

  • A comprehensive oral exam by one of our dentists to monitor the state or condition of your teeth, gums, jaw, joints and other tissues and structures
  • An oral cancer screening to identify lumps, bumps, discoloration, and other potential early signs of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the mouth
  • Preventative services by our “pros” at No Fear Dentistry; for instance, dental sealants can be easily and quickly applied during regular dental cleaning appointments
  • Guidance on everything from how to better brush and floss the teeth to tooth-friendly foods and oral care products that have received the “seal of approval” from our own Drs. Ducommun and Oliveira

Panoramic dental X-Ray

As needed, digital X-rays may also be ordered to take a closer look at hard-to-see areas for problems such as early-stage decay. Generally, oral problems produce little to no symptoms in their earliest stages. This fact makes detection of even the most subtle changes essential, and that requires expertise from dentists like ours, who are also equipped with the right diagnostic tools.
