Below, we answer your questions about dentures to help you make an informed decision about this restorative treatment:
If you’re missing some or all your teeth, partial or complete dentures can help rebuild your smile. We will conduct a thorough evaluation of your mouth and discuss your goals and preferences for replacing lost teeth to help determine if dentures are the best choice for you.
There are basically three types of dentures: traditional complete dentures, traditional partial dentures and implant dentures.
An upper and lower complete denture will replace all your teeth. This denture is removable, sits on your gums and uses suction and dental adhesives for support.
Traditional partial dentures replace one or more teeth, but not all. They’re removable and are held in place by clasps placed on adjacent healthy teeth.
Implant dentures are anchored in place by titanium implants placed inside your jaw through implant surgery. The implants fuse with your jawbone to become new tooth roots.
Dentures can be made of a combination of materials, such as metal, acrylic, or ceramic. Most dentures today are made of a lightweight acrylic resin material, which has a natural-looking appearance. The clasps of partial dentures are often made of metal. Implant dentures are a combination of titanium implants and porcelain restorations that closely resemble natural teeth.
We will take impressions of your gums and mouth to get accurate measurements for your new teeth. We’ll then send these impressions to a lab to have dentures custom-crafted for your use. Pre-made complete dentures are less costly than custom restorations, but won’t provide the level of comfort or functionality that you can get with dentures that are custom-fitted.
Modern dentures can last 5 – 10 years, depending on the quality, care and use of your replacement teeth. Loose dentures don’t always need to be replaced, as often we can reline or rebase these teeth to improve their functionality and fitness.
Today’s dentures are more natural-looking, comfortable and efficient than dentures of the past. Getting dentures will improve your chewing power, restore clarity of speech and make your smile whole again to improve the quality of your life.
